Within our Transport & Infrastructure division we are currently delivering a range of UK-wide asset inspection, assessment and design frameworks, focused upon maintaining key strategic assets. These include bridges, culverts, tunnels and other civil structures, crucial to the operational Rail and Highways networks.

We are looking to recruit early career professionals and technical staff to assist in the delivery of long-term frameworks we hold with Network Rail and Highways England. The roles will provide an excellent opportunity to learn, develop and progress your engineering career.

WSP are looking for Engineering Technicians to join our teams across Birmingham, Manchester and Wrexham.

Your new role, what’s involved?

  • Be part of the process of planning, reconnaissance, data review and the preparation of HSQE documentation relating to site-facing inspection and assessment works.
  • Site activities including inspection, testing and sampling to provide valuable data from which further reporting, analysis and design works will be developed.
  • Prepare technical reports, provide inputs into design production in accordance with WSP technical and quality process and procedures.
  • Apply the use of specialist software for reporting, assessment and design processes – including field-based technologies and hardware.
  • Working both in the office and at remote site locations upon environments including operational highways, railway and private development sites – in accordance with training and competences held as part of the role.
  • Demonstrate compliance with Health and Safety responsibilities and of other company procedures.
  • Be a proactive and collaborative team member, work closely with colleagues and fit seamlessly into a delivery team.
  • H&S focused – able to identify, escalate and take responsibility for matters which pose an immediate threat to the safety of the public or operational infrastructure.

  • Minimum HNC (or equivalent level) in Civil Engineering or other relevant discipline.
  • Prerequisite academic qualification to enable work towards professional accreditation of a recognised engineering or technical body – e.g. ICE Eng. Tech.
  • Technical qualification and competence aligned to site & structural inspection works in Highways and/or Rail sectors would be highly advantageous.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Knowledge and gained experience in highways, rail or general civil engineering projects is preferable.
  • The role will include site working and would suit those with previous experience of site activities in engineering, construction or related disciplines.
  • Knowledge and gained experience of management systems & processes used within WSP or similar engineering consultancy business would be advantageous.
  • Ability to prepare accurate site notes and data collation techniques – previous experience of site measurement, surveying and measurement techniques would be preferable.
  • Fluent spoken and written English – specifically technical report production.
  • IT literate.
  • Able to work independently and with minimal supervision and to seek advice when necessary.
  • UK Driving licence.
