Job Description

Job Profile Summary:

The principal function of the BI developer is to build ETL processes and develop canned and ad-hoc BI reports. WGU is a growing at more than 15% annually and has made substantial investments in increasing analytic capabilities.

The BI developer will be responsible for delivering efficient and effective BI solutions on time. They will code and work through the development cycle for ETL jobs and BI. The BI developer will understand business requirements and design optimal and efficient ETL processes for data acquisition. They will develop, deploy, manage and revise reports. They will design and implement data quality audits.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and build data acquisition ETL processes and BI reports at Western Governors University
  • Work closely and communicate effectively with business users and stakeholders.
  • Troubleshoot data issues.
  • Develop and deploy complex BI reports and dashboards in Cognos and Tableau. Manage change requests.
  • Code and perform unit testing of developed code.
  • Design process and business audits for data quality.
  • Perform data discovery from new data sources and make data available for reporting. (Different data types including JSON, XML, delimited sources, web services)
  • Follow agile development methodology for timely and precise delivery of bi reports for end users.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Works well in a team environment
  • Development code management and migrating code in different environments.
  • SQL programming
  • Ability to analyze and understand data sources and design a data model for data capture and ETL.
  • Ability to identify bugs and apply fixes. Check data sanity and integrity by means of process audits.
  • Ability to work effectively with other developers, business users, and the infrastructure team.
  • Ability to manage time between ad-hoc and formal reporting work.
  • Higher Education domain knowledge
  • Expertise with BI reporting tools, preferably Cognos and/or Tableau
  • Expertise in ETL tool for importing and exporting data across multiple systems using delimited files, web services.
  • Expertise in working with different databases and BI toolsets.
  • Use of industry best practices for code development, testing, implementation and documentation.
  • Multitasking with ability to prioritize work based on the organization needs.
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Experience with agile sprint management tools such as JIRA.
  • Ability to define process and business audits for data integrity.
  • Validation and testing skills to analyze, debug and fix issues.

Job Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field) and 2+ years of related experience, or an advanced degree without experience.
  • Three or more years of experience as a BI analyst/developer.
  • Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
