Job title: Senior Laboratory Research Scientist

Reporting to: Zena Hadjivasiliou, Physical Sciences Group Leader.

Contact term: This is a full-time, fixed term (12 months, with potential for extension) position on Crick terms and conditions of employment.


This vacancy is for a fixed-term Senior Laboratory Research Scientist (SLRS) to help establish the Mathematical and Physical Biology led by Dr. Zena Hadjivasiliou. The position is linked to efforts in the group to develop evolutionary algorithms to investigate how developmental programs, and the morphologies these programs control, evolve and diversify. The project will use a combination of analytical and numerical tools to develop a framework for the evolution of size, shape, and morphology. Initially, our aim will be to develop and optimize computational tools that can be used to study the evolution of gene networks that regulate spatial patterns. The successful candidate will drive their own project that will also feed into projects of other members of the group that study the evolution of development in different contexts, offering opportunities for collaboration.

The Research Group

Dr Hadjivasiliou’s laboratory uses maths and physics to study biological organization across length- and timescales. Details of the group and our research interests can be found here: successful candidate will join a growing team, working at the interface of Physics, Maths, Computer Science and Biology. Our team currently consists of two postdoctoral researchers and one Masters student, and 2 PhD students will be joining us in the fall. The successful candidate will undertake independent research, with a project designed to suit their skills, ambitions, and experience. The post holder will have the opportunity to help to train other members of the team in using the computational tools they develop. The project will benefit from state-of-the-art support from the HCP Science Technology Platform staff at the Crick. Collaborations with other members of the group will be expected and encouraged, as will those with other Groups at the Crick and more widely.

Key Responsibilities

These include but are not limited to:

  • Leading and developing specific research project(s) under guidance from the Group Leader
  • Providing specialist advice and guidance, sharing knowledge and expertise for the benefit of others
  • Providing significant contribution to the production of research papers for publication, presenting findings to group members and other internal audiences
  • Presenting work externally at national and international meetings
  • Authoring papers under guidance from the Group Leader
  • Developing computational tools to study the evolution of dynamical systems
  • Attend and contribute to internal seminars at UCL and The Crick
  • Contribute to the overall activities of the research team and department as required
  • Interact with the teams of collaborators at The Crick and UCL

Key Experience And Competencies

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, imaginative, open, dynamic and collegial, in addition to the following:


  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in Mathematics / Physics / Computer Science or related discipline completed or close to completion.
  • Good knowledge and experience in C, Python, Matlab or similar language
  • Track record of writing papers as evidenced by publications or submitted manuscripts in referred journals
  • Evidence of data presentation at scientific meetings
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work within a team
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and environments


  • Experience with high-performance computing environments
  • Experience using GPUs
  • Experience working on biological/interdisciplinary problems
