The Senior Manager, Digital User Research Strategy, is accountable for developing the vision and roadmap for the enterprise digital user research capability. Leveraging industry best practices in user research to inform a strategy that drives our organizations maturity in the field of embedding user research and user centered design practices as an integral part of our enterprise digital delivery capabilities.

The Senior Manager will operate as both a practice lead and practitioner, as they look to oversee and conduct research as part of the delivery and management of Beacon – the firms enterprise digital design system. They will be accountable for establishing a set of firm wide practices for digital user research, partnering with digital and design leaders from across the organization to define global research goals, research methods, and the tools that are required for the global research community.

As Senior Manager they will lead and embed user research activities and practices within the Beacon digital design system environment, forming part of the user centered design leadership team that is helping to establish best practices across the firm. They will work with embedded agencies and internal design teams, to oversee the delivery of user research activities. Together with the Head of Design, and Beacon Leadership, they will ensure that teams take a user centered, evidence-based approach to digital product design and delivery.

Leading the enterprise user research function within Beacon, they will help the organization develop a deep understanding of our clients. They will help to establish a common approach and toolset to managing, storing and sharing insights across our teams, supplying findings that allow teams to operate more effectively and design and build better services for our clients.

They will be engaged and contribute fully through all phases of the digital product lifecycle; from conceptual idea, aiding discovery through the provision of actionable insights, through to technical deployment and operational phases of a product, supporting the assessment of experiences released into production environments.

Working in a highly collaborative manner, the Senior Manager will be accountable for ensuring the needs of the digital design and delivery teams from across the organization are understood, and are embedded into the research practices and standards, whilst also driving the adoption of new methodologies based on their extensive research experience. They will communicate the research strategy and benefits to senior business leaders across the firm, influencing the further integration of research practices and adoption of the research standards.

Working with the Global Design leadership team, they will help drive the overall design and user research driven maturity of our organisation. With a passion for insights and user centred design they will advocate for and drive the consistent use of research across the team, and elevate the teams standard practices in consistently delivering best in class client experiences.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Establish the Beacon user research practice, and standardize common digital design research practices, through a clear vision for the role of user research
  • Define, establish and continually improve user centred best practises, principles and methodologies and standards for user research
  • Actively communication and ensure a common understanding of the enterprise user research standards, across all digital design and delivery teams, and key stakeholders
  • Contribute evidence from user research to inform organizational strategy, objectives and priorities, and influence capability roadmaps based on depth of knowledge, in partnership with product owners
  • Work with associates to foster a culture of user centered and evidence-based service design and delivery with teams actively involved in user research
  • Align user research outputs across teams to maximize value and impact, and sharing of relevant findings, by creating common standards for the management of user research insights
  • Lead the creation of a user research community of practice, and foster a network for practitioners to support each other, share specialist knowledge and drive an increase in the maturity and adoption of user research practices across the organization
  • Partner with digital and other internal teams to address complex business questions and provide insightful analysis and strategic recommendations through strong, easy to understand storytelling capabilities for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Work with product owners and business partners to create plans and roadmaps for priority research activities
  • Work with embedded design teams and third party agencies to plan, manage and conduct effective user research
  • Perform detailed research analysis (i.e. determine the structure, content, and quality of source inputs through examination of source systems and data samples)
  • Contribute to living personas that act as a practical artefact that design and product teams can reference when crafting solutions
  • Work closely with designers and developers to turn user research into actionable product/service requirements that feed into prototype development, and influence product direction
  • Partner with other insights teams in the business to support the ongoing tracking and analysis of industry trends, channel trends, segment trends, satisfaction/gap analysis, customer/segment demographic and behavioural profiles.
  • Turn quant & qual observations and insights into hypotheses through analytical rigor, leading to A/B tests that will confirm or deny those hypotheses and ultimately improve the performance of customer strategies. Take ownership, from definition to reporting, of the metrics related to the brand.
  • Integrates global and multicultural views into product development opportunities to inform designers, product owners and stakeholders

Build a systematic approach to conducting user research across digital teams, to create repeatable processes and standards and highly leverageable insights across the organization


  • Bachelor’s or equivalent in a research field
  • 8 -10 years of conducting and managing user research activities in a digital product development environment.
  • Experience working with both consumer and business segments in the field of user research
  • Deep knowledge and demonstrable practitioner experience of best practice design research tools and methodologies
  • Proven experience in delivering global digital research to support all stages of the digital design process
  • Financial Services (banking, credit card) industry experience preferred, but not required, but must be experienced in working in comp
    lex and highly regulated industries
  • Extensive experience of advocating for user research and helping organizations to adopt user centered practices and embed them into agile
  • Strong storytelling skills, to bring research findings to life
  • Extensive experience of helping teams adopt a wide range of user research methods, analysis and synthesis techniques and approaches to presenting and sharing findings.
  • Experience of leading a community of user researchers and continually assuring, improving and innovating user research practices.
  • Experience of guiding organizations to adopt inclusive practices and apply what they learn to design and deliver accessible services that work for all users.
  • The ability to align user research activities to help an organization understand changing user behavior, and the challenges and opportunities for the firm’s service propositions.
  • Experience working in a cross functional team, including design, product & technology
  • A collaborative approach to working within a globally distributed team, with globally based stakeholders
  • Experience developing within an agile framework
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with stakeholders to drive change
  • Someone with gravitas and authority to be able to define and demonstrate leadership in our quant/ qual standards, whilst effectively managing stakeholders in non-confrontational ways
  • An inquisitive mind that continually questions insights and observations to gain deep empathetic understanding
  • Create an environment for open constructive dialogue amongst the user research community, supporting the mentoring and talent development of practitioners across the organization
