Respiratory therapy is best described as the assessment and treatment of patients with both acute and chronic dysfunction of the cardiopulmonary system. Today’s respiratory therapists have demanding responsibilities related to patient care and serve as vital members of the healthcare team.

Respiratory therapists must have a broad knowledge of the pathophysiology of the cardiopulmonary system and the complex procedures required to properly diagnose and treat patients, from the very young to the very old.

• RTs at OPRMC are integral members of the Code Blue Team, Rapid Response Team and Trauma Team.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Director or Supervisor, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures ordered by a physician. Duties include medical gas administration, aerosol therapy, obtaining and analyzing blood specimens, performing patient testing, operating and maintaining various types of respiratory and cardiopulmonary equipment, providing mechanical ventilation, maintaining artificial airways, assisting with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, providing patient education, monitoring equipment and patient responses to therapy. Additional responsibilities include completing documentation in patient and departmental records, cleaning equipment, and maintaining safety and infection control practices.

Qualifications

• Completion of an NBRC approved Respiratory Therapy program.
• Must be registered with the National Board for Respiratory Care as an Entry Level Respiratory Care Practitioner.
• Must be licensed within the state.
• Current BLS affirmation.
• Must become certified in PALS within 6 months of hire.
• Must maintain certain clinical competencies required by TJC or the Department, appropriate to the level of service provided.
• Basic computer skills.
• One year of recent clinical experience.
