Key Skills And Responsibilities

  • Take charge of M&S Engineering excellence.
  • Modern standards approach. Demonstrate strong understanding and application of the most appropriate modern standards and practices. Take responsibility for coaching and guiding others.
  • Development process optimisation. You know how to analyse current processes, identify and implement opportunities to optimise, lead and develop a team of experts to deliver service improvements. You help to evaluate and establish requirements for the implementation of changes by setting policy and standards.
  • Information security. You have a depth of knowledge in information security. You can design, quality review and quality assure solutions and services with security controls embedded, specifically engineered as mitigation against security threats as a core part of the solutions and services.
  • Programming. Especially knowledgeable in at least one of the languages used at M&S, and can advise on the right way to apply clean code, standards, and methods, ensuring compliance. You maintain technical responsibility for all the stages and iterations of a software development project and provide technical advice to stakeholders and set the team-based standards for programming tools and techniques.
  • Prototyping. Have experience of using a variety of methods of prototyping, know how to share best practices and mentor others.
  • Service support. Look at strategic service design end to end. Identify, locate, and fix faults.
  • Systems design. Can design systems characterised by high levels of risk, impact, and business or technical complexity, leading system design practice within an enterprise or industry architecture. You influence industry-based models for the development of new technology applications. You develop effective implementation and procurement strategies, consistent with business needs.
  • Systems integration. Can define the integration build, and can coordinate build activities across systems and understand how to undertake and support integration-testing activities.
  • Availability and capacity management. Can run the service components to ensure they meet business needs and performance targets.
  • User focus. Can collaborate with user researchers and can represent users internally. Can understand the difference between user needs and user desires, able. to champion user research to focus on all users. Can prioritise and define approaches to understand the user journey, guiding others in doing so.

Joining the Digital Capabilities portfolio, you will have the opportunity to build and grow the technical foundations used by all of M&S. We are looking for someone who is passionate about delivering great developer experiences and demonstrating technical excellence by example.

One of our biggest challenges is continuously communicating and demonstrating the value of technical platforms. To be successful, you are able to confidently break down technical topics into simple explanations in both verbal and non-verbal formats. The ideal candidate would be known to the community and regularly speaks at conferences as well as being involved in open source.

There is ample opportunity to get hands on, and this is highly desirable, but above all we are looking for someone who can lead change both inside and outside of engineering and set the standard across our teams.

Key Skills Required (Tech And Interpersonal)

  • Expert technical skills in the stack (see below).
  • Experience designing scalable, highly available, distributed systems
  • Experience in the application of various architecture and design approaches such as Domain Driven Design, Event Driven Architectures, ETL etc
  • Expertise in modern operational excellence and reliability engineering.
  • Excellent people and interpersonal skills, able to provide constructive and regular feedback.
  • Proven ability to speak authoritatively about platform architecture, system design, and implementation details to senior technical colleagues.
  • Excellent communicator and tech writer.
  • Proven track record of influencing widely in an organisation
  • Significant experience in strategic and innovative thinking combined with impactful execution.
  • Ability to lead engineers to a desired outcome, without prescribing it.

Working together

As part of the Software Engineering Leadership, you’ll work with Technology management, Product and Platform teams, Architects, Product and Delivery Managers to solve problems, improve our efficiency and plan for the future of M&S. Depending on your area, you could also interact with other specialists such as Data Scientists, UX/UI Designers and analytics specialists.

Within these relationships, you will continuously review and improve our engineering strategy and manage the technology matrix available to our engineers within M&S Software Engineering.

Working with other engineers, as a member of M&S Software Engineering, you’ll also work with and learn from other engineers and specialists in the organisation via communities of practices and specialist interest groups.
