Description

Performs duties described in the Service Contract Act Service Order HEATING, REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING MECHANIC. Installs and maintains Direct Digital Control Systems. May perform duties of other classifications that have a pay rate equal to or lower than the employee’s current rate.

Duties/Essential Functions: Installs, services and repairs environmental-control systems in residences, office buildings and other commercial establishments. Installs, maintains, calibrates and troubleshoots Direct Digital and Pneumatic Control systems. Isolates malfunctions, diagnoses and physically repairs unit(s) or reprograms control systems. Maintains log and prepares and submits reports concerning control systems. Performs routine programming on various types of Direct Digital controls. Designs and programs operational control systems, including an operational database hierarchy. Performs system software and network analysis, creates backups as necessary. Creates reports in word processing and spreadsheets (e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel). Maintains and continually evaluates condition of systems, recommends and incorporates replacement or repair of components or units. Replaces pneumatic control systems. Analyzes needs, designs configuration, determines programming sequence, identifies replacement components, purchases and installs Direct Digital control system(s) to replace pneumatic control system(s).

Utilizes knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipe fitting and structural layout. Mounts compressor and condenser units on platform or floor, using hand tools, following blueprints or engineering specifications. Fabricates, assembles and installs duct work and chassis parts, using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment. Installs evaporator unit in chassis or in air duct system, using hand tools. Cuts and bends tubing to correct length, shape using cutting and bending equipment and tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment. Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant. Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit. Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source. Installs air and water filters in completed installation. Injects small amount of refrigerant into compressor to test systems and ads Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure. Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation. Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges or soap-and-water solution. Wraps pipe in insulation batting and secure them in place with cement or wire bands. Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units, using electrician’s hand tools and test equipment.

Marginal Functions:

Performs other duties as requested. May install, repair and service air conditioners Installs, diagnoses, repairs controls systems Performs Preventive and Corrective Maintenance as desired

  • High school or equivalent
  • Formal Training in Direct Digital Controls and Pneumatic Controls

Two years advanced education or equivalent specialized training

Experience

Two years journeyman level experience in trade

Skills

Ability to use hand and power tools associated with job duties. Proficient with computer word processing and spreadsheet programs

Certificate/License/

Registration, etc

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid Duval County Journeyman HVAC Mechanic
  • EPA Universal Certification
