Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, Legal Services Division, is responsible for providing quality legal advice to the Government of Alberta. Within the Division, the Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team provides legal services and advice to Children’s Services, Community and Social Services, Maintenance Enforcement and the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee. FASCL also acts as the Central Authority with respect to Hague Convention matters (International Child Abduction).

Role

The Legal Services Division is seeking Legal Officers at the LO1-LO4 classification level to join the Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team in Edmonton (FASCL Edmonton).

We are looking for lawyers with advocacy experience at the Provincial Court level and/or the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Appearing in Provincial Court on child protection applications and running trials under the Child, Youth, and Family Enhancement Act;
  • Appearing in Court of Queen’s Bench on appeals of child protection matters and in Court of Queen’s Bench Chambers for family law related matters;
  • Effective management of a busy litigation caseload;
  • Routinely reviewing and assessing documents for disclosure;
  • Routinely providing advice and support to the client groups regarding child protection issues, adoptions, child support and maintenance enforcement;
  • Drafting clear, concise, and accurate legal opinions.

The ideal candidates will demonstrate some or all of the following skills:

  • Strong oral and effective written advocacy abilities;
  • Competency with civil or criminal trial procedure;
  • Negotiation and alternate dispute resolution methods;
  • Effective problem solving and interpersonal abilities;
  • Experience providing practical, client-focused verbal and written strategic and legal advice to enable decision-making;

Qualifications

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD). The candidates must be active members or must have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.

For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.

Assets

  • Family law experience, may include demonstrated work experience with the Alberta Family Law Act, the federal Divorce Act and the Child Support guidelines, and the Maintence Enforcement Program; the Alberta Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and the federal legislation an Act respecting First Nation, Inuit and Métis Children, youth and familes S.C. 2019, c.24.; OR
  • Criminal prosecutions experience.

Salary

Classification and salary will be determined based on candidate’s assessed related experience.

  • Legal Officer 1 – $3,055.53 – $3,936.73 bi-weekly ($79,749 to $102,748/year)
  • Legal Officer 2 – $4,391.03 – $5,600.88 bi-weekly ($114,605 – $146,182/year)
  • Legal Officer 3 – $5,535.55 – $6,467.12 bi-weekly ($144,477 – $168,791/year)
  • Legal Officer 4 – $6,337.96 – $6,970.31 bi-weekly ($165,420 – $181,952/year)

This competition will be ongoing as it will be used to full current and future permanent and temporary vacancies at the same or lower level within the Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General, Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team.
