About the job
The Role
The world of financial services is increasingly focused on Risk Management. Risk professionals need to demonstrate acute levels of knowledge, skills and expertise to be effective in assisting the organisation to meet a wide range of risk requirements set out in legislations or required by regulators. To meet these requirements many organisations will have dedicated Risk department that are experts in the relevant legislation/ regulatory requirements.
This role is designed to give the successful candidate an understanding of the various functions and tasks performed within the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) of Canopius, a global specialty insurance and reinsurance company.
You will start working towards the externally accredited International Certificate in Enterprise Risk Management with the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) whilst learning the skills and behaviours for a Risk professional. The apprenticeship is 15-18 months in length and you will become an “IRMCert”. You will complete your apprenticeship whilst developing in your role. You will join as a permanent team member of the Risk function.
What are risks?
Risks are everywhere and each day we all make decisions about what risks we are willing to take in our lives and how we can best manage (or control) them to achieve a positive outcome or reduce the effects of a negative outcome. The same principles apply to a business when looking at the risks they are willing to take in order to make a profit or fulfil its corporate objectives. This is where the ERM Function supports the business. The Function is responsible for ensuring the business manages its risks to an acceptable level as agreed by the Board.
Responsibilities will include:
You will be working in the Enterprise ERM Function alongside our Risk Analysts and Risk Managers. We are small but collaborative department. During your time with us, you will
develop an understanding of the core ERM processes, support this activity and engage with various stakeholders around the business to gain a broader understanding of different departments, their processes and the risk control activity. You will learn about the different risks facing the business, how they could impact us and learn strategies for managing these risks.
Key aspects of the role will include:
- Interpreting and analysing risk and control data
- Developing reports on control performance and changes to the risk profile
- Supporting the engagement and advising various Departments on their risks
- Researching into emerging risks (future areas that could threaten our objectives or provide greater opportunities for us to deliver against them)
- Investigations into risk events (things that have gone wrong) to identify root causes and actions which can stop them from reoccurring
Essential Skills
- An understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint);
- A willingness to learn and get involved;
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
- Enjoy collaborating with others and offering ideas;
- Keen to develop themselves as an individual;
- Analytical and critical thinking skills;
- Honesty and strong work ethic
- Excellent organisational and time keeping skills with an ability to meet deadlines.
Education Requirements
Achieved grade B in GCSE Maths and English Language (or equivalent).
Predicted / Achieved A-levels/BTEC and achieved a minimum of 3 B’s or 120 UCAS points or 300 for those who studied before 2017.
A-level/ BTEC Maths, Economics, Law or Business studies desirable.

Please complete the online application form by uploading your CV and covering letter. Included in your covering letter should be details about why you would like to apply for the particular apprenticeship and what draws you to Canopius and the Insurance industry. This should be no longer than 500 words.
Submissions for applications will close by the end of May.
- Video recording interviews
If successful in the CV and covering letter submission you will then be invited to complete an online video interview. The interview will ask specific questions relating to your chosen apprenticeship scheme.
We will then review your interview and will let you know the outcome within a two week period. If you are successful in passing the video interview, we will then let you know if we can progress you to the next stage.
The assessment centre will be scheduled in around the end of June.
- Starting date
The apprenticeships will be starting in September 2022.
Eligibility
You must have legal right to work in the UK as our apprentice roles are not ones we can sponsor.
You will not be able to apply for an apprenticeship:
- Where you have already achieved the skills, knowledge and behaviours that would form part of the Apprenticeship you have applied for.
- Where you hold qualifications, in the same subject area, that are at a higher grade than the Apprenticeship you have applied for.
- If you are currently undertaking another Apprenticeship or Qualification which won’t be completed by September 2022.
- If the Apprenticeship replicates learning you have already completed elsewhere.
