The AstraZeneca Discovery Sciences (DS) unit provides scientific support to early drug discovery across the global portfolio of small molecule drug discovery projects.

What will you do?

We are looking for someone to join our team of medicinal chemists focused on lead generation, and hit-to-lead optimisation, for the delivery of high-quality lead compounds across multiple therapy areas. Our goal is to enhance AstraZeneca’s capabilities in hit identification and lead generation. We have several opportunities available working across different hit finding techniques such as fragment-based lead generation and DNA-encoded library screening.

The group works alongside other DS teams including computational chemistry, structural biology, biophysics and chemical biology, as well as with other global medicinal chemistry teams across all therapeutic areas.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong desire to work in a highly collaborative team environment

Desirable criteria

  • Track record of prior success working in medicinal chemistry
  • Detailed experience identifying structure activity relationships (SAR) to address potency, selectivity, pharmacokinetics and in vivo efficacy
  • Competence in structure-based and ligand-based design
  • Experience in broader medicinal chemistry concepts and strategy, with a track record of applying innovative solutions that have positively impacted project delivery
  • An appreciation for computational techniques that aid compound design
  • Evidence of ability to effectively contribute to multidisciplinary scientific teams
  • Ability to work closely with external synthetic chemistry resource and apply innovative chemistry solutions, with resulting impact in project delivery
  • Capable of planning, prioritising and performing own work and actively contribute to compound design and synthesis, e.g. retrosynthetic analysis, route design and problem solving using literature and own knowledge
  • Able to coordinate and deliver provision of patent examples/experimental write-ups
  • Good knowledge of the drug discovery process
