The Health & Safety (H&S) consultancy team in PPM London provides professional health, safety and CDM services to a range of external and internal clients. Construction-related H&S and CDM services provided by the team are of strategic importance to design commissions undertaken by Arup, ensuring that the company discharges its statutory CDM obligations as a Designer and/or Principal Designer. Supporting national infrastructure projects and major buildings commissions, the team also provides specialist services to energy and renewables projects, a growth sector for Arup.

Readily available, professionally qualified resources are essential to delivering pipeline projects. As well as exporting time the team provides a range of safety, health and CDM services to its client base. Away from fee-earning work, professionally qualified H&S resources are essential to evidence Arup’s ‘competency’ for prequalification and tender questionnaires for public sector work (and many private sector opportunities).

The demands on the PPM H&S team to deliver projects continues to rise, and requests to support forthcoming projects will see current resources stretched further. We seek to recruit a CDM expert ideally experienced in major projects, including infrastructure (wind power/ renewables/hydrogen/heat), science and technology (data centres/comms) and engineering (rail). The post will be advertised both internally and externally.

Job Overview

Provide specialist CDM, construction health and safety, and safety by design advice and support for a mix of external clients and the internal business. Provide design health and safety support solutions for internal and external clients to ensure compliance with duties imposed by CDM Regulations 2015. The post-holder will provide a range of services including strategic H&S guidance and planning, design risk management, procedures, safety compliance, audits and developing and implementing training programmes. The post holder is likely to be a people manager and be responsible for direct reports.

Role

To work within the firm’s health and safety consultancy team and provide CDM and health and safety services to internal and external clients. Responsible for carrying out the full range of CDM and design health and safetyisk management services with minimal acclimatisation on new projects. The post supports Arup’s design activities and provides a range of consultancy services, including strategic, tactical and operational aspects of our clients’ businesses.

The Role Will Include

  • Writing policies and standards.
  • Carrying out inspections and audits.
  • Writing project progress reports.
  • Engaging directly with clients on a project basis (and maybe the sole responsible for the client’s relationship).

The post-holder will actively contribute to the business development of the team and the wider firm, preparing and/or leading bids and proposals. Independence in managing the finances of projects is a crucial requirement as is the ability to establish long term client relationships and to identify potential opportunities. Although this role delivers CDM and safety by design services, knowledge or interest in general health and safety would be advantageous.

It is likely the post-holder will become a People Manager and be responsible for the management and oversight of direct reports.

Requirement And Skills

  • Identify and address differences and assist in resolving potential conflicts.
  • Remain firm whilst maintaining good relations with all parties.
  • Liaise with stakeholders and manage sensitive relationships.
  • Maintain good communications with the client.
  • Succinctly report progress to the client and author reports which do the same.
  • Experience of managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Front corporate training in a knowledgeable and authoritative manner.

Competencies

  • First degree or equivalent in engineering, construction or science.
  • Chartered professional (CMIOSH, CMaPS or CEng).
  • Experience: Delivering a broad range of CDM/H&S related advice with substantial design risk experience in infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent client-facing and communication skills (verbal and written), self-motivated
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications.
  • Strong influencing skills. Ability to deal with senior people within the firm and externally. Experience of people management and leadership.
