This is a position for a significant role in Arup’s Business and Investor Advisory (BIA) services, to help build and shape the team’s offering, profile and impact in the realm of major projects related to climate change, sustainability and resilience.

As part of Arup’s response to the climate crisis and its strategy of putting sustainable development at the heart of everything we do, we are developing a suite of services focused on helping clients accelerate and unlock sustainable investment, under the umbrella of Sustainable Investment Advisory (SIA). Our SIA services bring together the range of technical, economic, transaction, commercial and financial services required by clients at each stage of the investment cycle.

A critical area of our work is helping our clients to deliver major infrastructure projects, particularly in energy and utilities and projects with a ‘first of a kind’ nature, supporting government and arm’s length bodies, and also private sector infrastructure bodies, over the entire programme lifecycle, from initial conceptual analysis through to end delivery.

Working closely with the Director, Sustainable Finance Major Projects, the aim of the role is to assist in developing this major projects service proposition, developing and delivering business opportunities for the team and for the firm, managing major project engagements, while also assisting in recruiting and managing team members. The individual will work collaboratively with colleagues across BIA and other Arup services, and the role will include acting as project leader integrating the delivery of Arup’s services on major projects, leading the development of business cases, and advising on the structuring, funding, financing and delivery of major projects.

The successful candidate will also assist in the development of thought leadership and taking part in events that raise the team’s profile, both internally and externally, and in promoting and delivering sustainable investment.

The individual will be experienced in the commercial and financial aspects of the development and delivery of infrastructure and other major projects and acting at the interface between the public and private sectors. They will be responsible for engaging with investors, governments, sponsors/developers financial institutions and delivery bodies in the infrastructure space across all sectors, but with a focus on the energy sector, to influence policy direction, identify opportunities for Arup and SIA, and, above all, contribute to the increased delivery of sustainable outcomes.

Responsibilities Will Include

Business development

  • Support the leadership in: setting the strategic direction for SIA; identifying and qualifying priorities and opportunities, and managing the team to grow and deliver the business
  • Maintain and develop a network of own clients/major project targets through business development activities both within and external to Arup
  • Assist in the development of thought leadership that furthers and promotes Arup’s positioning in the market, and its climate change, sustainability and resilience priorities
  • Lead or support others in the writing of proposals, and bring an awareness of client experience and expectations to our proposals

Project delivery

  • Lead Arup’s day to day delivery on projects, commissioning and integrating multi-disciplinary advice and leading the delivery of the commercial-financial workstreams
  • Lead the provision of funding, financing and commercial expertise and experience into projects
  • Support other projects within SIA and BIA, leading workstreams or providing subject matter expertise as required

People and Career development

  • Take an active role in the development of staff including providing pastoral care, coaching, mentoring and advice as required
  • Support the management of resourcing requirements on a day to day basis
  • Attend Arup sponsored internal and external training courses to address development needs
  • Provide and obtain feedback to/from team members as necessary


Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience of:

  • A passion for achieving change in relation to climate change, sustainability and resilience
  • Developing and delivering policy in the low carbon sector
  • Leading projects and/or having significant leadership roles within projects
  • Leading and/or advising on novel and first of a kind projects from their conceptualisation through to delivery
  • Stakeholder management skills, engaging with, for example, investors, governments, sponsors/developers financial institutions and delivery bodies
  • Projects in the energy sector (experience in other sectors desirable)
  • Strong analytical skills acquired in a commercial-financial role, covering a deep and broad understanding of transaction structures
  • Excellent communication skills, including an ability to form effective and enduring relationships with senior clients and team members alike


  • Financial modelling skills – experience in commissioning, developing, reviewing and operating complex financial models
  • Knowledge and experience of project funding and financing mechanisms in the energy and other sectors
  • Prior experience in a client role in a major infrastructure or similar project
